ALA is a studio of close-knit architects and designers with an ardent belief in the value of architecture in place making. From our studio on the Wandsworth riverside we have established a reputation for thoughtful, robustly detailed, added-value architecture that endures and often delights.
We seek to identify and project the unique programmatic and contextual qualities of the client organisation and their objectives and the project location. Completed schemes are the result of an enriching collaborative process that draws together ideas and initiatives from client, consultant and contractor teams.
Our projects range from new headquarters buildings to central London offices, upmarket apartment buildings and the renewal of listed buildings:
ALA has a broad background in the design of offices both for developers and users and we understand how the business objectives of organisations can be supported through considered workplace design. Our 22,000m2 Aberdeen HQ for BP put in place their Blue Chalk work place strategy.
We are completing 5,000m2 of flexible use offices over 3 buildings in central London for the Howard de Walden Estate and one of these is now being fitted out as a 1,200m2 private clinic – complete with MRI scanner. We develop designs and procure large buildings at a fast pace and to firm budgets. We have recently completed a 10,000m2 BREEAM Excellent office building for Abstract Securities in Croydon which was designed, consented, constructed and fully let within 30 months.
ALA have recently completed a residential building of 18 upmarket apartments in central London and are presently designing a luxurious private home within a listed 1820s townhouse in Fitzrovia. We have also completed a number of student housing projects including the design and delivery of two developments of 500 and 300 bedrooms in Luton for Campus Living Villages.
We have completed a number of masterplans for large corporations such as GSK which have informed real estate development and disposal strategies for their R&D campuses. We are also working closely with Goodman to establish viable uses for their business park assets at Reading International business park.
We provide clients with invaluable expertise in the design and construction of beautiful, sustainable buildings. We aim to contribute to the international target for an 80% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in the built environment by 2050
ALA was founded in 2003 by Andrew Lett and Gary McCarthy both formerly principals at listed practice Aukett. ALA presented an opportunity to create a close-knit client and project focused studio where senior designers enjoy involvement throughout the duration of a project. Will Hulbert (also former Aukett) and Paul Bukin joined in 2007. Andrew left ALA in 2008 and Gary left ALA at the end of 2014 due to illness.
Since then the practice has been directed and managed by Will and Paul with the support of a committed team of architects and trainee architects. Alastair Binnie joined us in 2017 as a consultant to strengthen our holistic and research based approach to sustainable and low carbon design.
Will Hulbert is an RIBA chartered architect and completed his diploma and architectural qualification at the Bartlett, University College London. He has led major office, residential and hotel projects in the UK and across Europe with practices YRM, DEGW, Aukett and MYAA. He has received BCO awards on 3 headquarters buildings.
Will leads design direction within the practice and brings thought and invention to all project stages. He is completing a 2,000m2 BREEAM Excellent new office building and an 18 apartment residential building in central London.
He has a particular interest in the renewal and repurposing of heritage buildings and is a member of Icomos. At ALA he has completed the conversion and refurbishment of three grade II Georgian townhouses for The Bedford Estate and is presently designing the reuse and restoration of a listed property in Fitzrovia for a private home owner.
Paul Bukin obtained a BSc in Architectural Design & Technology at the University of Southampton and brings to ALA a broad knowledge and experience in construction technology and systems. In previous practices he worked in the healthcare and residential sectors on fast track design and build projects. At ALA he has led the detail design and delivery of 10,000m2 of new offices in Croydon for Abstract Securities – completed in 23 months from inception to completion. Paul also delivered 800 student apartments in Luton for Campus Living Villages.
Paul is responsible for the technical development of the practice including Continuing Professional Development and technical reviews and oversight across our projects. Paul is also introducing BIM drawing management systems to selected projects.
Alastair Binnie is an experienced project manager and a specialist in the technology and design of energy efficient and environmentally friendly buildings. Since 1992 he has undertaken projects that have incorporated the maximum practical use of sustainable design principles, some of which have been at the leading edge of sustainable design.
