Five simple rectilinear office buildings define and enclose a central courtyard – a landscaped recreational heart sheltered from harsh Northeast winds. The bright, fresh architecture seeks to distinguish and lift the cluster from its lacklustre industrial context.
The economical 2 and 3 storey buildings total over 11,000m2 and incorporate a low carbon strategy that guided orientation, architectural form, fabric and services systems. Rainton Bridge won the ‘Best Commercial Project’ award from Sunderland City Council and the National Landscape Award from the British Association of Landscape Architects.
Contract Value £13.5m (Cat A) Completed 2008.
